The regular season hits the final week for the Murray State Racers with a pair of Ohio Valley Conference road games starting with a Thursday 7:30 p.m. clash with the Eastern Illinois Panthers at Lantz Arena in Charleston, Ill. The game finds the Racers on a nine-game win streak since their loss more than a month ago at Belmont (Jan. 18). The Racers are tied with Belmont at 14-2 for first place in the league and are looking to claim their 25th OVC championship and first since the 2014-15 season.
The Racers (22-5) are coming off a 75-65 home win over Tennessee Tech that closed the home season 14-2 and winners of their final nine games at the CFSB Center. The win clinched no worse than a No. 2 seed and a double-bye to the semifinals of the OVC Tournament (Feb. 28-March 3) at the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana.
Jonathan Stark, the OVC Preseason Player of the Year, has six 30-point games this season and had a pair of them last week for the Racers including 30 against TTU on Saturday. Stark is leading the OVC in scoring for a second-straight season at 21.6 points per game. His amazing run at MSU just keeps getting better and better. Heading into the game at EIU, he has 1,307 points in 60 games. In the history of two-year players at MSU, only De'Teri Mayes has more as he scored 1,340 points in 63 games from 1996-98.
Froggy 103 (WFGS 103.7 FM) airs every MSU game with "Voice of the Racers" Neal Bradley calling the action in his 27th season. Former MSU assistant coach Kenny Roth provides commentary. Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com has free online streaming audio. OVCDigitalNetwork.com has free online streaming video of all OVC games.
In the first meeting between the Racers and Panthers (Dec. 28) in Murray, freshman sensation Ja Morant had the Racers' first triple-double in eight years with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 14 assists. Stark scored 21 points and MSU finished the 80-52 win on a 19-5 run. In recent series action, the Racers won at EIU in their last meeting 83-72 but lost there in 2016 by a 85-74 score. MSU is 17-7 at Lantz Arena and have won three of their last five games there.
All-OVC Preseason pick Terrell Miller, Jr., enters the EIU game nearing a career mark of joining the MSU 1000-Point Club. He has 928 points.
Away from home, the Racers have won their last four including wins at Tennessee State (Jan. 20), Southeast Missouri (Feb. 1), UT Martin (Feb. 3) and SIUE (Feb. 10).
