Three Racers All-OVC First Team - Stark Player Of The Year

The Murray State Racers landed a trio of players on the All-Ohio Valley Conference Men's Basketball Team for the 2017-18 season as announced by the league office after a vote of the head coaches and sports information directors. As the Racers head into the OVC Tournament as the No. 1 seed at the Ford Center in Evansville, their 24 wins and league regular-season championship has been fueled by Jonathan Stark, Terrell Miller, Jr., and Ja Morant. All three were named to the All-OVC First Team and Stark was honored as the OVC Player of the Year. Morant was also named to the All-OVC Newcomer team. The last time MSU had three players make All-OVC, it was from the 2011-12 team when Isaiah Canaan, Donte Poole and Ivan Aska were selected. Jonathan Stark – G, 6-0, 180, Sr., Munford, Tennessee OVC PLAYER OF THE YEAR & ALL-OVC FIRST TEAM Jonathan Stark is leading the OVC in scoring for a second straight season at 21.7 points per game. He is fifth in assists at 4.0 per game and is second in free throw percentage at .890 (21stNCAA). Stark has been one of the best scoring machines in the nation with six games of 30 or more points including a season-high of 36 points against Southeast Missouri on Jan. 4. His 630 points this season ranks him 16th in the nation. He was named OVC Player of the Week four times this season. Stark represents the 19th total OVC Player of the Year for the Racers and the 14th different player. He's the first to be honored since Cameron Payne (2014-15) and Isaiah Canaan who won his second in the 2012-13 season. A season after setting the MSU single-season record with 108 3-pointers, Stark has 103 (9thNCAA) as he leads the Racers into the postseason. His 211 career 3-pointers is fourth all-time at MSU even though he's only played two seasons. With a .424 career 3-point percentage, Stark is also fourth all-time at Murray State. In his two seasons with the Racers, Stark has become the program's all-time leading scorer among two-year players with 1,353 points. He's the only active player in NCAA D-I that has more than 2,100 points and 500 assists when his two seasons at Tulane are added to his two seasons with Murray State. Terrell Miller – F, 6-8, 245, Sr., Jacksonville, Florida ALL-OVC FIRST TEAM For much of the season, Terrell Miller was among the top-10 rebounders and scorers in the OVC and his nine double-doubles has pushed him to 8.0 rebounds per game (98th NCAA), third in the OVC and 12th in the league with 14.7 points per game. His season-high scoring game was a 25-point performance against Illinois State and his best rebounding game was 15 against Auburn. He also had 12 rebounds on three occasions against Eastern Kentucky and the last two games of the regular season at Eastern Illinois and Austin Peay. Miller is 31st in the nation with 6.97 defensive rebounds per game and in the OVC, he's fourth in field goal percentage at .500. Miller is pressing to become a member of the MSU 1000-Point Club as he enters the OVC Tournament with 956 points. He has 501 MSU rebounds and is already in a special class at MSU as one of only five two-year players that have reached 500. If Miller can reach 1,000 points, he'll become the 21st MSU player with 1,000 points and 500 rebounds. Stark and Miller are the 28th and 29th MSU players to be named All-OVC twice. Ja Morant – G, 6-3, 170, Fr., Dalzell, S.C. ALL-OVC FIRST TEAM & ALL-OVC NEWCOMER TEAM What sets Ja Morant apart at the point guard position is his ability to rebound. There are few players in NCAA D-I that can score, rebound and assist like him. Heading into the OVC Tournament, Morant is ranked 20th in the OVC in scoring at 12.6 points per game, 10th in rebounding at 6.8 per game and second in assists with 7.3 per game. In NCAA D-I, he is the second ranked freshman (14th overall) in assists per game behind only Oklahoma sensation Trey Howard at 9.1. Four times this season, Morant has crashed the boards for double-digit rebounds including a season-high 12 against Saint Louis and SIUE. His 14 assists against Eastern Illinois was third all-time in a single-game at MSU. In that same game with EIU, Morant became just the second Racer (in records that start in 1984), to record a triple-double when he had 11 points, 10 rebounds and 14 assists. Morant was named OVC Freshman of the Week four times in the regular season. The All-OVC Newcomer Team was first selected in the 1992-93 season and was halted from 2000-05 and restarted in 2005. Morant is the 17th Racer to be named. Stark and Miller were on the newcomer team last season. Morant follows the last Racer freshman to be named All-OVC in Cameron Payne after the 2013-14 season. 2017-18 All-OVC Men's Basketball Teams and Award Winners OVC Player of the Year: Jonathan Stark, Murray State OVC Defensive Player of the Year: Christian Mekowulu, Tennessee State OVC Freshman of the Year: Terry Taylor, Austin Peay OVC Coach of the Year: Matt Figger, Austin Peay ALL-OVC FIRST TEAM Jonathan Stark, Murray State Dylan Windler, Belmont Averyl Ugba, Austin Peay Denzel Mahoney, Southeast Missouri Terry Taylor, Austin Peay Amanze Egekeze, Belmont Nick Mayo, Eastern Kentucky Terrell Miller, Murray State Austin Luke, Belmont Ja Morant, Murray State ALL-OVC SECOND TEAM Christian Mekowulu, Tennessee State Curtis Phillips, Jr., Tennessee Tech Jalen Henry, SIUE Malcolm Drumwright, Jacksonville State Montell Goodwin, Eastern Illinois ALL-NEWCOMER TEAM Averyl Ugba, Austin Peay Terry Taylor, Austin Peay Ja Morant, Murray State Ledarrius Brewer, Southeast Missouri Jason Burnell, Jacksonville State Mack Smith, Eastern Illinois MSU OVC PLAYER OF THE YEAR SELECTIONS Jim Jennings, 1963-64 Claude Virden, 1968-69 Les Taylor, 1971-72 Les Taylor, 1972-73 Gary Hooker, 1979-80 Glen Green, 1982-83 Jeff Martin, 1987-88 Jeff Martin, 1988-89 Popeye Jones, 1989-90 Popeye Jones, 1990-91 Marcus Brown, 1994-95 Marcus Brown, 1995-96 D.T.
