Murray State's Ja Morant and Darnell Cowart were honored Monday as the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week and Newcomer of the Week as announced by the league office after a vote of the OVC's sports information directors.
For Morant, he tied the OVC record for the most weekly awards in a single-season of right by Kenneth Faried of Morehead State from the 2010-11 season. Faried also holds the OVC career record with 14. The Murray State record for career weekly awards is 10, set by Isaiah Canaan(2009-13) and Marcus Brown (1992-96).
Out of Dalzell, S.C., Morant had a big week in which he averaged 26.5 points per game to go with 10.5 assists. In a pair of wins against UT Martin and Southeast Missouri, he hit 69 percent from the field, 50 percent from the 3-point line and 81 percent from the free throw line. Against UTM, he scored 30 points, dished out nine assists and grabbed seven rebounds. Against SEMO, Morant had his 17th double-double of the season with 23 points and 12 assists.
The OVC Newcomer of the Week honor for Darnell Cowart is his first and the first for the Racers since Jonathan Stark on Feb. 20, 2017.
Cowart, a junior from Chicago, averaged 17 points and 12.5 rebounds per game last week when he hit 56 percent from the field and 85 percent from the free throw line. Against UTM, he was 8-12 from the field for 22 points and he hauled in 13 rebounds. He came back against SEMO Saturday and scored 12 points with 12 rebounds in only 21 minutes of court time.
The Racers go into the final week of the regular season with a share of first place with Belmont, each team at 14-2. The Racers play Thursday at Morehead State and come home Saturday to host Austin Peay in the Heritage Bank Battle of the Border.
